Reid da Silva, a fifteen year Bellingham resident, works in the construction trades doing everything from skilled carpentry to log-smithing. He created his first mirror-backed frame, recycling an old wood-hung window, ten years ago as a wedding gift for a friend. Mirror-backed frames can create the useful illusion of space in a kitchen, entry or bathroom while capturing the beauty of a natural wood finish or a custom colored combination finish in oil or acrylic paints. The idea stuck with him and continued to grow, combining Reid's interests in woodworking, creating functional wall art such as picture frames, mirrored window frames with shelves, and planter boxes, using old cedar barn wood and other recycled building materials like old wood-hung windows. Some of the materials have been donated by local residents and some purchased from businesses such as the Re-Store. Creating a cottage industry allows Reid to reduce the environmental impact of driving a work van by working from home some of the time. He has volunteered with Rebuilding Together doing home improvement projects for elderly and disabled people and also volunteers with the Whatcom Disc Golf Association at Mossy Roc. Reid lives in Bellingham with his partner, Mitzi, a high school teacher. |
